Being sent on a self-destructive charge against the invading Germans, he uses his great marksmanship skills, tought to him by his grandfather, to fork over not only himself but commissar Danilov. Nikita Khrushchev arrived in Stalingrad to organize the citys defenses and demanded for ideas to boost moral. So, he publishes tales of Vassilis exploits in the armys paper that portray him as a national hero and propaganda icon. Vassili is transferred into the sniper division and he and Danilov became friends. They both besides become romantically interested in Tania, a mystical in the local militia. With the increasing effectiveness of the Soviet snipers, German Major Erwin Konig is deployed into Stalingrad to take issue Vassili.

Erwin lures Vassili into a restrict and took out two of his flattenow snipers. Danilov recruits a young local boy Sacha Fillipov to act as a double agent by giving Konig false information about where Vassili is hiding. Vassili sets a trap for Konig and managed to wound him, but during a second attempt Vassili fell asleep and his sniper log was stolen. Tania and Vassili have fallen in revel and Danilov becomes extremely jealous. Konig kills Sacha and hangs his body from a pole to bait Vassili. Shrapnel wounds Tania and Danilov thinks she is dead.
