Biography of a Philosopher: Ibn Sina (Avicenna)
Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Abdallah ibn Sina (370-428/980-1037), known in the West as Avicenna, was
equally famous as a philosopher and a physician. The liveliness that followsincluding an unusual firstperson narrative at the beginningis by his disciple and secretary, Abu Ubayd al-Juzjani. It is found in the
works of several later biographers, including the Tarikh al-hukama (History of the philosophers) of Ibn
al-Qifti (d. 646/1248) and the Uyun al-anba fi tabaqat al-atibba (Sources of information concerning the
biographies of the physicians) of Ibn Abi Usaybia (d. 668/1270).

MY FATHER was a man of Balkh, and he travel from there to Bukhara during the
days of Nuh ibn Mansur;1 in his reign he was employed in the administration, being
governor of a royal estate of the realm in the outlying district of Bukhara called Kharmaythan.
