By having a physical appearance of wholenesss past, or memory, then one can constantly remember what it was from or how they got it.

Also, this type of memory is most often caused by a traumatic event in ones past that can be seen by others. The second level of memory is haunting. The symbol that represents this memory is the murder of beloved. Later in the novel, Sethe realizes that Beloved is the incarnate of her daughter, which she murdered. Then Beloved starts to take advantage of Sethe by using the past to harass her. Sethe cant do anything against it since she cant deny what Beloved says.
