Is cognitive Behavioural Therapy effective in moderating symptoms of dementia praecox?



Abstract

There are a growing number of studies which deal evaluated Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for individuals with schizophrenia. The purpose of this dissertation or literary productions analyze is to investigate if Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is effective in moderating symptoms of schizophrenia. The paper presents a limited literary works review of research articles from leading mental health journals which have evaluated the energy of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. The review is limited in term of time and due to restricted word count. Seven randomize controlled trials were identified, the results showed some improvements in specific areas of symptomatology, such as insight, reducing symptoms of schizophrenia and hospitalisation. It appears that there is consistent evidence to suggest that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for schizophrenia can reduce psychotic symptoms in comparison with treatment as usual (medication) and former(a) favorable therapies such as befriending or supportive counselling.

Introduction and background

The aim of this literature review is to test the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in moderating symptoms of schizophrenia. The review will address the following objectives:
