Sigmund Freud wrote an study dealings with a state of unhappiness many people go through, what triggers it and the different types it can be classified as. His essay was called grieve and Melancholia, and its purpose was to explain the difference between the two. In this essay he explains the conditions that must be present for these two states of sadness to develop along their paths. In the story of The Waves, Virginia Woolf narrates the lives of six individuals and their various(a) journeys and struggles from childhood through adulthood. I find many similarities between Freuds essay and Woolfs novel.
A state of melancholy is defined by Freud as the reaction to the loss of a loved person, or loss of some abstraction which had taken the place of one, such as ones county, liberty, an ideal, and so on.
